Back-end of schedule provides opportunity for Reign FC with FIFA 16
As we reach the end of the Dog Days of Summer, the conclusion of the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League regular season rapidly approaches. For Reign FC, that means just five remaining matches before the start of the postseason.
Seattle is one of three teams — alongside the Chicago Red Stars and Washington Spirit at the top of the table — to play three-fourths of their schedule, while the rest of the league has played an extra match (with Boston having already played an NWSL-high 17 games).
Reign FC is slightly buoyed by a back-end of the schedule that has it playing three of its final five games at home: this Wednesday’s matchup with the Houston Dash, an August 26 tilt with the Boston Breakers, and a game against Sky Blue FC on August 29. All three of those affairs have a 7 p.m. start.
Meanwhile, the Red Stars have back-to-back-to-back home tilts, before finishing its campaign with a pair of road matches. FC Kansas City also has three remaining home games, while Washington, Houston, Western New York, and Sky Blue FC each have two.
Portland is the lone team in the league with just one remaining home game, while Boston will finish its season with three-straight road games.
Of course, the home field advantage has been no more stark than it has on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium, where Reign FC has gone 6–0–1 in 2015, while extending its home unbeaten streak to 20 games, dating back to the start of the 2014 season.
However, the other two teams at the top of the table have also had strong home results this season. Chicago has avoided the loss column at home, going 2–0–3 at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex while also picking up a win at Toyota Park as part of a doubleheader with the MLS’ Chicago Fire. The Spirit has gone 6–0–2 at the Maryland SoccerPlex, outscoring its opponents 15–5 in the process.
Of the remaining five matches, Seattle has just one against a team currently in playoff position — the season-finale against the Spirit on September 5.
However, the Dash is the first team out of the playoff picture, just two points behind fourth-place FC Kansas City, making the home/road back-to-back on August 12 in Seattle, and August 21 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston a critical pair of games for both teams’ postseason aspirations.
The final two regular season home games for Seattle — matchups against Sky Blue FC and the Breakers — will likely loom large for Reign FC in the battle for playoff positioning as well. Even with those two teams currently sitting at the bottom of the table, both could have revenge on the mind with earlier losses to Seattle this season.
