This promo features European superstars, a monster with a football for a head and an epic trombone battle…

Considering the fever pitch of anticipation across the globe, you might think that EA Sports would go with a pretty straightforward promo ahead of FIFA 16’s upcoming release – maybe an ad with a couple of famous faces and a bit of gameplay, just to help our natural excitement along.

They’ve gone for a very different approach, however. Sure, there are some star footballers in this ad. Sure, there’s plenty of awesome in-game footage. But there’s also some weird stuff. In fact, there’s a lot of weird stuff.

The advert starts pretty normally. Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero show off some tasty skills in motion sensitive suits. They are quickly transformed into their in-game selves, while several cheeky new skills are slipped into some gameplay footage. Then, suddenly, things get odd.

We, the confused viewers, are transported to a Japanese gameshow. A monster with a football for a head dances behind a kid doing keepy uppies. Right.

Ah! Football monster!
After a cameo from basketball giant Kobe Bryant, we are then teleported to a stadium where two fans engage in a serious trombone battle. As you do.

TROMBONE BATTLE!
Then, finally, a commentator and an operatic singer dressed as a valkyrie battle it out to shout loudest about a Messi strike.

OPERA FIGHT!
All of this in the name of “playing beautiful”, it seems. We’re not sure what the connection is, to be honest.

Still, it’s not like we’re any less excited having seen this ad. Weirdness or no weirdness, bring on the FIFA!
